Background of the Study

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) represent one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with their burden increasing as populations age. The elderly population is particularly vulnerable to CVDs due to a combination of aging-related physiological changes and the accumulation of various risk factors over the course of their lives. These risk factors include hypertension, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, poor diet, smoking, and family history. In Nigeria, including Kano State, the elderly population has seen a rise in CVD-related health issues, leading to increased healthcare demands and a strain on healthcare systems.

In Kano State, the healthcare infrastructure faces challenges in meeting the needs of an aging population, and cardiovascular health among the elderly is under-researched. This study aims to assess the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in the elderly population of Kano State. Understanding the risk profile of this demographic will provide crucial data for developing targeted interventions aimed at preventing cardiovascular diseases in this high-risk group.

Statement of the Problem

The elderly population in Kano State is experiencing increasing rates of cardiovascular diseases, but little is known about the specific risk factors contributing to the high incidence of these diseases. There is a lack of targeted research into the cardiovascular risk factors among the elderly in the region, which hinders effective public health planning and the implementation of preventive measures. This study seeks to address the gap in knowledge about the cardiovascular risk factors prevalent among the elderly in Kano State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To identify the prevalent cardiovascular risk factors among the elderly in Kano State.

2. To assess the relationship between lifestyle factors and cardiovascular disease risk among the elderly in Kano State.

3. To recommend public health interventions to mitigate cardiovascular risk factors in the elderly population in Kano State.

Research Questions

1. What are the predominant cardiovascular risk factors among the elderly in Kano State?

2. How do lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, and smoking contribute to cardiovascular disease risk among the elderly in Kano State?

3. What preventive strategies can be implemented to reduce cardiovascular risk in the elderly population in Kano State?

Research Hypotheses

1. The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., hypertension, obesity) is higher among the elderly in Kano State compared to the general population.

2. A poor diet and sedentary lifestyle significantly contribute to the high cardiovascular disease risk among the elderly in Kano State.

3. Preventive health interventions targeting the elderly population in Kano State will reduce the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the elderly population in Kano State, assessing common cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Limitations include the potential for underreporting or inaccurate self-reporting of risk factors and the challenges of accessing rural elderly populations with limited healthcare access.

Definition of Terms

• Cardiovascular Risk Factors: Behavioral, biological, and demographic factors that increase the likelihood of developing cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and sedentary lifestyle.

• Elderly Population: Individuals aged 60 years and above.

• Cardiovascular Diseases: A group of diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels, including hypertension, stroke, and coronary artery disease.
